You’re eating clean.
You’ve cut the gluten, dairy, sugar… maybe even joy.
Your doctor ran some thyroid labs, gave you the all-clear, and sent you on your way.
But you still feel off. Bloated. Foggy. Sluggish.
And maybe—just maybe—a little gaslit.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And you’re not crazy.
As a team of functional Registered Dietitians, we’ve worked with hundreds of women who’ve had “normal” thyroid labs—but still feel terrible. The truth? Sometimes it’s not your thyroid that’s the root problem—it’s the victim of deeper dysfunction.
Let’s break it down. 👇
First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room: the standard thyroid panel your doctor ran may not be telling the full story. Most conventional panels only check TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone)—which, while important, is just one small piece of a much bigger puzzle.
Many of our clients come to us with a TSH that’s technically “within range,” but they still have every symptom in the thyroid dysfunction playbook:
Sound familiar?
Just because a lab value is in the “normal” range doesn’t mean it’s optimal. And more importantly, it doesn’t mean your body is functioning at its best.
We recently worked with a client (we’ll call her Sarah) who checked every box for hypothyroidism symptoms. But when we looked deeper—really deeper—we discovered something surprising.
Her thyroid wasn’t the primary problem at all. It was the downstream casualty of a cascade of other issues:
These are the real root causes that were driving her symptoms. And once we supported those systems through food, lifestyle, and targeted testing, her thyroid didn’t need “fixing”—her body started working with her again.
The thyroid doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s part of a much larger, beautifully complex network that includes your gut, liver, adrenal glands, and even your blood sugar response. If one area gets out of sync, it can create ripple effects throughout your entire body.
Here are some common root causes of thyroid-like symptoms that don’t always originate in the thyroid itself:
Your gut plays a massive role in how your body converts thyroid hormone. In fact, around 20% of T4 is converted to active T3 in the gut—but only if your microbiome is healthy. If you’re dealing with things like SIBO, bacterial overgrowth, or chronic bloat, that conversion slows waaay down.
When your blood sugar is swinging from high to low throughout the day (think: skipping meals, caffeine on an empty stomach, or too many refined carbs without balance), it signals stress to the body. Chronic blood sugar dysregulation puts your adrenals and thyroid in a constant state of compensation—leading to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain.
Your thyroid needs specific minerals to function: selenium, zinc, magnesium, iodine (but not too much!), and iron—just to name a few. If you’re depleted (hello, chronic stress, gut issues, and restrictive diets), your thyroid simply doesn’t have the tools it needs to keep up with your body’s demands.
Cortisol (your main stress hormone) and thyroid hormones work hand-in-hand. If cortisol is too high (or too low) for too long, it can blunt TSH, decrease T4-to-T3 conversion, and increase reverse T3 (a form of thyroid hormone that blocks the good stuff from getting into your cells).
That’s why we always ask about your daily rhythms: sleep, movement, meal timing, and recovery. If your schedule is working against your biology, your symptoms may persist no matter how “healthy” your diet looks.
