Brain Fog

Unlock Your Energy, Clarity, and Mood by Balancing Your Hormones and Gut Health

If you’re feeling drained, mentally foggy, or experiencing mood swings, your thyroid and gut health may be out of sync. These two systems are deeply interconnected, and when they’re not working together, you might notice symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, and even digestive issues. But don’t worry—there’s a way forward. By addressing these imbalances, you can experience a transformation in your energy, focus, and emotional well-being.

Let’s dive deeper into the science and show you exactly what you can do to take control of your health.

The Science Behind Thyroid and Gut Health

  • Thyroid Health: Your thyroid plays a central role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and hormonal balance. It controls how efficiently your body uses energy, regulates your mood, and even influences your gut function. When thyroid hormone levels are too high or too low, the effects cascade through your body, often disrupting other systems like digestion and cognition.
  • Gut Health: Your gut isn’t just responsible for digesting food. It is home to trillions of microorganisms—your gut microbiota—that have a profound effect on your overall health. These microbes produce vital neurotransmitters like serotonin, which regulates mood and cognitive function. Imbalances in gut bacteria can cause inflammation, stress, and can even impair brain function, leading to issues like anxiety, depression, and cognitive fog.
  • The Gut-Brain Axis: The gut-brain axis is a direct communication link between your digestive system and your brain. Emerging research shows that when your gut is inflamed, it sends signals to your brain, contributing to mental and emotional symptoms like brain fog, depression, and low energy. This bi-directional communication pathway means that by improving gut health, you can reduce inflammation in your brain and restore mental clarity and emotional balance.

How We Help You Reclaim Your Health

We combine the latest science with personalized action plans to address the root causes of your symptoms. Through functional nutrition, we aim to restore the balance between your thyroid and gut health so you can feel vibrant and clear-headed again.

Our approach is based on these principles:

  1. Personalized Functional Nutrition
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We start by understanding your unique symptoms, health history, and lifestyle, using advanced lab testing to uncover the root causes of your thyroid and gut imbalances. From there, we create a customized plan that fits your life and your goals.
  2. Root-Cause Resolution
It’s not just about masking symptoms—it’s about finding and addressing the root cause of your thyroid and gut dysfunction. Whether it’s a nutrient deficiency, hormone imbalance, or gut dysbiosis, we target the underlying issues for lasting results.

Action Steps to Support Your Thyroid and Gut Health

To help you feel your best, here’s a step-by-step action plan backed by science:

  1. Support Thyroid Function with Key Nutrients
Your thyroid relies on nutrients to function optimally. When your thyroid is well-supported, your metabolism runs more efficiently, leading to better energy and mood.
  2. Boost Gut Health with Probiotics and Prebiotics
Incorporating fermented foods and other foods that are rich in probiotics can support digestion, reduce gut inflammation, and even improve brain function. Studies show that gut bacteria, particularly those that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), can reduce brain inflammation and improve cognitive function.
  3. Reduce Inflammation with Anti-Inflammatory Foods
Colorful fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation in both your gut and brain. By reducing inflammation, you can support clearer thinking and more balanced moods. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, protecting brain cells from oxidative damage and supporting mental clarity.
  4. Hydrate for Optimal Brain and Gut Function
Proper hydration is essential for both your brain and digestive system. Water helps improve focus, reduce brain fog, and aids in digestion. Aim to drink water throughout the day to keep your systems running smoothly. Dehydration impairs cognitive function, mood, and digestion.
  5. Consider Targeted Lab Testing and Supplements
Nutrient deficiencies and hormone imbalances are often at the root of thyroid and gut health issues. Through targeted lab testing, we can identify deficiencies in critical nutrients like vitamin D, magnesium, and iodine. Once identified, we’ll provide specific recommendations, including tailored supplements, to correct these deficiencies and improve your overall health. Micronutrient imbalances have been linked to thyroid dysfunction and mood disorders. Emphasizing these nutrients can support thyroid health, gut function, and emotional well-being.

Meet Nicole Fennel Functional Dietitian

Hey There, I'm Nicole!

I'm Nicole, Integrative & Functional Registered Dietitian Nutritionist — and a Hashimoto's patient and busy momma of three who has been in your shoes. I spent years trying to figure out why I felt so off despite doing all the "right" things, and that experience completely shaped the way I work with women today.

My whole approach is built around nourishing your body with real food you actually want to eat, not white-knuckling your way through a six-week protocol that leaves you more exhausted and more confused than when you started. Because restriction doesn't heal anything. Real, sustainable nourishment does.

I'm a college professor and educator at heart— I teach a range of classes from freshman level "Introduction to Nutrition" and graduate-level Women's Health and Nutrition courses, and that passion for making complex science click in plain English is woven into everything I do. If you leave a session without actually understanding why we're doing what we're doing, we haven't done our job.

I love going on long walks while listening to an audiobook (my FAVORITE is The Count of Monte Cristo, but I'm currently reading Lord of the Rings), being totally outnumbered with my three wild kiddos, eating yummy food, sipping a good cup of coffee, and (trying) to crochet!
