The Most Unhinged Thyroid Advice We’ve Ever Heard (and What You Actually Need to Know)

“You’re just getting older—fatigue is normal for women your age.”

That’s what a provider once told me.

I was 26. Unmarried. No kids. Sleeping 9 hours a night and still waking up feeling like I got hit by a truck.

If you’ve ever left a doctor’s office feeling more confused (or dismissed) than when you walked in, welcome. You’re in the right place.

As functional dietitians who work with women navigating thyroid dysfunction, we hear it all. The gaslighting, the armchair nutrition advice, the complete disregard for actual lived experience. And honestly? It would be hilarious if it weren’t so damaging.

Let’s walk through some of the most unhinged thyroid advice we’ve ever heard, why it’s flat-out wrong (and sometimes dangerous), and what actually matters when it comes to healing your thyroid and getting your energy, digestion, mood, and metabolism back on track.

Common Thyroid Advice That Deserves a Face Palm

We’ve heard everything from mildly misguided to full-on science fiction. Here are some of the greatest hits:

1. “Just eat more Brazil nuts.”

The logic? Selenium is good for thyroid health. Brazil nuts have selenium. Boom, you’re cured.

Here’s the thing: yes, selenium is important for thyroid hormone conversion and immune balance. But Brazil nuts vary wildly in selenium content. One might contain 90 mcg, another 300+. Plus, if you have underlying inflammation or poor gut absorption, your body may not even use that selenium effectively.

The truth: Selenium plays a role, but it’s just one tiny puzzle piece. And when it comes to Hashimoto’s, more isn’t always better—especially without looking at your full nutrient profile.

2. “Your labs are normal. You’re fine.”

If I had a dollar for every time a woman came to us with a TSH of 3.5 and a provider who said, “Looks great!”—I’d have enough to fund free thyroid panels for the whole country.

TSH isn’t the whole story. And “normal” isn’t always optimal.

The truth: For women trying to feel energized, focused, and like themselves again, an optimal TSH is often between 1.0–2.5. We also need to look at Free T3, Free T4, thyroid antibodies (TPO & TgAb), reverse T3, and more. Context is everything.

3. “Nutrition doesn’t matter.”

This one makes our blood boil.

Your thyroid is part of your endocrine system. Your endocrine system runs on nutrients—vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids. If you’re inflamed, underfed, over-stressed, or missing key building blocks, your body can’t make or use hormones effectively.

The truth: Nutrition is not a magic bullet, but it is a foundational piece. And it absolutely matters when we’re talking about healing, not just surviving.

4. “You’re just stressed—try yoga.”

Oh, yoga? Great, I’ll just downward dog my way out of autoimmune disease.

Stress does impact the thyroid. But reducing stress isn’t just about bubble baths and scented candles. It’s about regulating blood sugar, supporting your adrenals, getting enough protein, and actually feeding your cells.

The truth: Managing stress is essential—but it has to go deeper than “just relax.” You need a physiological reset, not just a new meditation app.

So… What Does Work for Healing Hashimoto’s?

Now that we’ve aired out the bad advice, let’s talk about what’s worth your energy.

Here’s how we help women actually feel better:

1. Start with full thyroid labs and functional testing.

We don’t just rely on TSH. We run a full panel, plus specialty labs like HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis), GI MAP stool testing, and sometimes hormone testing (like the DUTCH test) to understand your full picture.

This helps us answer questions like:

  • Are you converting T4 to T3 properly?
  • Is inflammation blocking your hormone receptors?
  • Are gut infections or nutrient depletions slowing your metabolism?

2. Rebuild the foundations: blood sugar, protein, and minerals.

This is the part most people skip. But if your blood sugar is swinging, your protein is too low, or you’re depleted in magnesium, sodium, or potassium—you won’t get far.

We work on what we call the BRAIN Method:

  • Blood sugar balance
  • Regulate inflammation
  • Adrenal resiliency
  • Intestinal support
  • Nutrient repletion

This process gives your body the tools to respond to your thyroid medication and finally start healing.

3. Personalized nutrition and supplementation.

No one-size-fits-all protocols here. We look at your labs, your lifestyle, and your goals. Then we build a plan that’s realistic, nutrient-rich, and sustainable. Sometimes that includes targeted supplements. Sometimes it means less restriction—not more.

4. Ongoing coaching and root-cause detective work.

Healing isn’t linear. And it’s definitely not just about food. We help clients understand the why behind their symptoms, adjust protocols over time, and stay motivated when progress feels slow.

If You’ve Been Dismissed, You’re Not Alone

Here’s what I want you to know:

  • You’re not crazy.
  • You’re not lazy.
  • It’s not “just in your head.”

If your body feels off, bloated, exhausted, puffy, wired-but-tired, moody, or like it’s running on fumes—you deserve better than “just eat more Brazil nuts.”

There is a path forward. It starts by understanding your body, rebuilding your foundation, and working with someone who actually listens.

That’s what we do at Chews Food Wisely.
