Meet the Client: Overcoming the Struggles of a Busy Life

When we first connected, this client was a busy mom of four, freshly relocated across the country, and homeschooling her children. Despite spending thousands on functional doctors, specialists, and supplements, she felt stuck in a cycle of fatigue, bloating, and weight gain. Even though she knew she had Hashimoto’s, her medical care had neglected her thyroid, leaving her feeling “blah” and frustrated.

Despite her best efforts—eating less, drinking more caffeine, and visiting countless doctors—nothing seemed to work. Her weight kept climbing, her headaches persisted, and she was constantly exhausted. Despite her determination, she knew her thyroid condition was only part of the puzzle.

The Struggle: When Nothing Seems to Work

She’d tried it all—intermittent fasting, different diets, various supplements, medications, and endless doctor visits. Yet, nothing brought lasting relief. Her doctor suggested thyroid medication, but deep down, she knew that wasn’t the entire solution.

Flipping the Switch: Understanding the Root Causes

We needed to unlearn old habits and reeducate her on the importance of thyroid health. Your thyroid doesn’t just control metabolism—it affects energy, digestion, weight, focus, and much more. When your thyroid, weight, and sex hormones are out of balance, it’s usually a signal that something deeper is at play. Blood sugar levels, stress, gut health, inflammation, and nutrient deficiencies all contribute to thyroid dysfunction.

We dove deep into understanding how these elements worked together, and that’s when everything changed.

Weight loss isn’t just about calories in versus calories out. Our bodies adapt when we restrict calories, often slowing metabolism and storing more fat. Instead of focusing on calorie-counting, we needed to restore balance by addressing the root causes. We focused on optimizing her biochemistry, regulating blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and improving cellular communication—transforming her body from fat storage mode to fat-burning mode.

By implementing balanced eating strategies, optimizing vitamins and minerals, and understanding how her body responded to insulin, we made impactful changes.

Next, we tackled inflammation. We identified poor methylation that was impacting detoxification, hormone production, and vitamin activation. By addressing inflammation, we helped curb her sugar cravings and improved her overall health.

We also ran blood and hair tests to uncover deficiencies in key nutrients—vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and metabolites. These elements are crucial for cellular communication, metabolism, and digestion. With this knowledge, we were able to fine-tune her thyroid treatment and optimize it at the cellular level.

In just four months, the results were astonishing. She lost 20 pounds, boosted her energy levels, eliminated headaches, and regulated her digestion. Gone were the days of relying on caffeine and naps. She felt more confident in her eating routine, and the best part? Her healthy habits began to influence her entire family.

Hey There, I'm Nicole!

I'm Nicole, Integrative & Functional Registered Dietitian Nutritionist — and a Hashimoto's patient and busy momma of three who has been in your shoes. I spent years trying to figure out why I felt so off despite doing all the "right" things, and that experience completely shaped the way I work with women today.

My whole approach is built around nourishing your body with real food you actually want to eat, not white-knuckling your way through a six-week protocol that leaves you more exhausted and more confused than when you started. Because restriction doesn't heal anything. Real, sustainable nourishment does.

I'm a college professor and educator at heart— I teach a range of classes from freshman level "Introduction to Nutrition" and graduate-level Women's Health and Nutrition courses, and that passion for making complex science click in plain English is woven into everything I do.
