Beyond the Thyroid Panel: The Unique Ways We Assess & Support the Thyroid (Thyroid School #3)

The Unique Ways We Assess & Support the Thyroid

If you’ve ever heard, “Your thyroid labs look fine,” but you still feel anything but fine, you’re not alone. Lucky for you, I am on a mission to empower you to know exactly what questions to ask so you get the answers you’ve been looking for!

  • We see this all the time:
  • 💤 You’re constantly tired, no matter how much you sleep.
  • 💇‍♀️ Your hair is thinning or falling out.
  • 🌪️ You feel stuck in a cycle of bloating and weight gain that won’t budge.

Here’s the thing: your symptoms aren’t lying. And while the standard TSH test is a helpful starting point, it’s like reading the Cliff’s Notes version of a novel—you’ll never understand the full story without all the chapters.

Here is a video I recorded on this topic

What’s Really Going On?
TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is a brain hormone, not a thyroid hormone. It signals your thyroid to produce T4 and T3, the hormones that regulate your metabolism, energy, and so much more.

  • But here’s where it gets tricky:
  • 🧠 Your brain scans your environment for stress—whether physical, emotional, or inflammatory—and can hit the brakes on your thyroid to conserve energy.
  • 🔄 T4 (mostly inactive) must convert into T3 (bioactive and usable by your cells). If this process is disrupted, you’ll feel hypothyroid symptoms even if your labs “look normal.”
  • 💤 High stress, inflammation, insulin resistance, or poor nutrient status can slow this conversion or prevent your cells from using the hormones properly.

The Right Labs Unlock the Full Picture.
To truly understand your thyroid health, we need to look deeper. That’s why we order a comprehensive panel, which often includes:

  • 🔍 TSH – The hormone your brain sends to your thyroid to regulate hormone production.
  • 🔍 Total T4 and Total T3 – To measure the total amount of these hormones in your bloodstream.
  • 🔍 Free T3 and Free T4 – The unbound, usable forms of thyroid hormones.
  • 🔍 Reverse T3 – An inactive form of T3 that can block thyroid hormone activity.
  • 🔍 Thyroid Antibodies – To check for Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune activity.
  • 🔍 Thyroid-Binding Globulin – To see how much hormone is “bound up” and unavailable for use.
  • But wait– there’s more!! Those are just the thyroid-specific labs!
  • We also examine how well your body is able to signal, produce, convert, absorb, transport, and utilize those hormones by assessing deeper areas like:
  • 🌟 Micronutrients – Are you low in CoQ10, B vitamins, or other essentials needed for hormone production and energy?
  • 🌟 Mineral Balance – Using hair tissue mineral analysis, we assess long-term patterns of nutrient deficiencies and stress.
  • 🌟 Gut Health – Are inflammation or imbalances in your gut microbiome disrupting hormone conversion?
  • 🌟 Blood Sugar & Inflammation – These are critical drivers of thyroid dysfunction that can’t be overlooked.

Why Does This Matter?
Because every step of your thyroid hormone journey is influenced by nutrition and lifestyle. Without the right nutrients and a healthy environment, your thyroid & thyroid hormones simply can’t do their job.
