Candida Albicans

Candida Albicans, commonly just known as “Candida”, is a type of yeast that is naturally present in small amounts in the body. It plays a role in digestion and absorption of nutrients. Issues arise, however, when levels of this opportunistic fungus get out of the right proportions. The bacteria naturally present in the gastrointestinal tract typically helps to control the amount of yeast. Yeast and other bad bacteria take advantage of when “protective” bacteria have their guard down. When yeast is overgrown, toxic by-products are released into the bloodstream and can cause “leaky gut” and subsequent health issues such as headaches, brain fog, food sensitivities, and autoimmune issues, to name a few.

Several factors can alter the amount of yeast present, including:

  • Eating a diet high in refined carbohydrates (sugar, sweets, etc.)
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Taking birth control pills
  • Too much stress
  • Frequent antibiotic use
  • Insufficient physical activity
  • Lack of sleep

Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth:

  • Skin and nail infections (i.e. athlete’s foot, nail fungus, skin breakouts)
  • Fatigue, feeling run down, lack of energy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence
  • Autoimmune diseases (i.e. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, etc.)
  • Difficulty concentrating, brain fog
  • Joint pain, headaches, muscle pain
  • Skin issues (eczema, hives, rashes)
  • Urinary tract infections, rectal itching, vaginal itching
  • Severe allergies, itchy ears
  • Sugar cravings

Management Protocols to Stop Yeast Overgrowth:

It is important that yeast are “starved” off while also killing with anti-fungal supplements. Diet alone is often not effective enough to completely eradicate yeast and could take months for symptoms to resolve, so medical grade nutraceuticals (or medications prescribed by your physician) need to be utilized.

  • Antifungal Supplements & Medications
  • Eliminate inflammatory foods
  • Introduce healing & nourishing foods

Nutritional Therapy Discussions include:

  • The importance of the gastrointestinal tract on the management of Candida
  • Ways to optimize your bacterial ratios in the GI tract
  • Foods to help “heal and seal” the gut
  • The role of stress on the body
  • Therapeutic foods to incorporate
  • Foods to avoid for symptoms relief
  • Targeted nutritional supplementation
