Why Your Thyroid Labs Say “Normal” but You Still Feel Like Crap (Thyroid School #10)

I was sitting in my car after a doctor’s appointment, holding a copy of my “perfectly normal” thyroid labs.

And I started crying.

Not because I got bad news—because I didn’t. The doctor told me everything looked great. TSH was in range. “You’re fine,” they said.

But I didn’t feel fine.
I felt like a stranger in my own body.
I was exhausted. Foggy. Puffy. My digestion was unpredictable, my mood was all over the place, and workouts left me feeling wrecked, not energized.

And honestly? I was starting to wonder if I was making it all up.

But in that moment, something clicked:
My body wasn’t lying—my labs just weren’t telling the whole story.

That was the turning point. And if you’re reading this because your labs came back “normal” but you still feel off… I want you to know: you are not alone, and you are not crazy.

This is something we see all the time in our practice—and it’s one of the main reasons people come to work with our team of Dietitians at Chews Food Wisely.

Can You Have Hypothyroid Symptoms with Normal Labs?

Yes. 1000 times yes.

Many of our clients come to us with clear signs of thyroid dysfunction—fatigue, constipation, weight changes, brain fog, anxiety—but have been told everything is “within range.” Sometimes their labs are technically in range, but that doesn’t mean their thyroid is functioning optimally.

Here’s the truth:
Just because your labs are normal doesn’t mean your thyroid is working the way it should.

The Missing Link: Stress and the Thyroid

One of the biggest drivers of thyroid dysfunction that often gets overlooked is stress—and how it affects thyroid function from top to bottom.

When your body is under stress (and that includes more than just emotional stress—think under-eating, over-exercising, poor sleep, inflammation, or even mental load), your brain shifts into survival mode.

And in survival mode, your thyroid takes a back seat.

Here’s What Stress Can Do to Your Thyroid:

  1. Disrupts brain-to-thyroid signaling
When cortisol (your primary stress hormone) is elevated, your brain may intentionally stop sending the signal to your thyroid to produce hormone. This can show up as a low or suppressed TSH—even when symptoms are screaming “hypothyroid.”
  2. Reduces hormone production
Your thyroid may start making less T4 or T3. So even if TSH looks “normal,” you could be functionally low in what your body actually needs.
  3. Slows T4-to-T3 conversion
T3 is the active hormone that gives you energy, supports metabolism, and sharpens your brain. Stress can block this conversion—leaving you with symptoms, even when labs appear okay.
  4. Creates cellular resistance
Even if you’re making enough hormone, chronic stress and inflammation can make it harder for your cells to absorb and respond to it.

👉 This is how someone can have a textbook thyroid panel on paper—and still feel absolutely off in real life.

Symptoms of Low Thyroid Function (Even with “Normal” Labs)

Here are just a few of the symptoms we look out for when assessing thyroid function with clients:

  • Constant fatigue or “crashing” in the afternoons
  • Difficulty losing weight (or sudden weight gain)
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Constipation, bloating, or sluggish digestion
  • Dry skin, brittle nails, or hair loss
  • Mood swings, low mood, or anxiety
  • Cold hands and feet, feeling cold when others aren’t
  • Irregular, heavy, or missing periods
  • Low libido or motivation
  • Feeling “off” but being told you’re “fine”

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth taking a deeper look—not just at your labs, but at your lifestyle, stress levels, and symptoms in context.

What Should a Full Thyroid Assessment Include?

In most conventional care settings, providers only test TSH (and maybe Free T4). But that only tells a very small part of the story.

At Chews Food Wisely, we use a more comprehensive and functional lens, which includes:

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO and TGAb)
  • Nutrient markers like ferritin, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, B12, and magnesium
  • A review of symptoms, stress load, digestion, sleep, and cycle patterns

This is how we connect the dots—not just between labs and symptoms, but between your body and your life.

The Role of Functional Nutrition in Thyroid Support

We believe healing happens when your body feels safe. And that requires a plan that supports both the biology (hormones, nutrients, inflammation) and the lifestyle (stress, sleep, mindset, nourishment).

Our team of Dietitians is trained to look at the whole picture:

  • Are you eating enough to support hormone function?
  • Is your digestion absorbing key nutrients like iron and selenium?
  • Are your workouts helping or harming your recovery?
  • Are there hidden stressors (like inflammation or perfectionism) adding to the load?

We help you answer these questions—and create a personalized plan so your thyroid can actually do its job again.
