A Personal Story That Hit Too Close to Home
I recently tried one of those lab testing companies that allows you affordable access to comphrensive lab panels. Honestly, I LOVE the idea. I think getting that information is truly life-changing and empowering, but what you DO with that information is what makes all the difference. I was intrigued by the idea of what the consumer experience with big-box lab ordering companies is life, so I ordered a test and had (literally) 20 vials drawn and eagerly waited for my results. A couple of weeks later, a detailed report hit my inbox.
The lab data? Really impressive. It matched up very closely with the kinds of tests we run for our own clients—nutrient panels, hormones, inflammation markers. But then I scrolled to the part I was most curious about: the AI-generated supplement plan.
And that’s where things went off the rails.
There it was: a confident recommendation that seemingly looked benign until I started to dig deeper. Among the suggestions for things like Vitamin C and fish oils, there was a recommendation for iron. No biggie right? Here’s the problem—I have a genetic blood disorder that makes iron toxic to my system. We’re not talking about minor side effects; we’re talking about liver damage, oxidative stress, and long-term harm. If I had taken that advice at face value, without the clinical knowledge using my educational background and self-awareness of my medical history, I could have done serious damage.
That’s when I realized: AI can be helpful, but it doesn’t know you.
The Appeal of Instant Answers
We’re living in a time when information is everywhere, and shortcuts are tempting. There are thousands of health apps, at-home lab kits, and AI tools that promise to fix your problems with one tap. If you’re tired, bloated, and burned out, it makes sense to want fast answers.
But here’s the truth: when it comes to thyroid issues, hormone imbalances, or weight loss resistance, there’s no quick fix. And definitely not one created by a robot.
Why AI Misses the Mark
Most AI-generated supplement plans rely on isolated data points, not the full picture. It might see low ferritin and suggest iron—but it doesn’t know your history. It might flag low T3 and suggest iodine—without realizing that high reverse T3 means your body’s in stress mode and can’t use that iodine well. Or maybe that you’re living with Hashimoto’s and iodine may cause more harm than good in supplemental doses. It doesn’t see the skipped meals, the stress, or the fact that you’ve been feeling off for years.
In functional nutrition, context is everything. Here’s why AI misses the mark:
What Could’ve Gone Wrong
Back to my own story: I have beta-thalassemia, a genetic condition that affects how my red blood cells carry oxygen. On labs, it can mimic iron deficiency. But supplementing iron doesn’t help—in fact, it causes harm. That kind of insight doesn’t show up in an algorithm.
And if you’re managing something like Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism? It’s even more complicated. You might benefit from selenium—or it could worsen your autoimmune response. B vitamins might help—or your body might need extra methylation support first.
This is why human guidance matters. A trained professional can look at your labs, your history, your symptoms, and piece together a plan that makes sense for you.
The Interconnected Web of Thyroid, Gut, and Hormones
Your thyroid doesn’t operate in a vacuum. It’s influenced by everything from blood sugar swings to gut permeability to inflammation. You can’t optimize your thyroid without also thinking about your liver, your microbiome, your mitochondria.
AI tools don’t zoom out far enough to connect those dots.
A practitioner trained in functional nutrition will consider:
That kind of whole-body mapping isn’t possible in an AI-generated protocol.
What You Get With a Human Expert (and Why It Matters)
We don’t just read your labs and hand you a list of pills. We listen to your story. We ask about your sleep, your stress, your symptoms. We put your thyroid numbers in context—so we can understand what’s really going on beneath the surface.
We order labs that most providers skip: reverse T3, TPO antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, homocysteine, nutrient markers, and more. We go deep because you deserve answers that actually move the needle.
Then we build your plan with:
Use AI for Insight—But Not for Intervention
Look, I’m all for using tech to learn about your body. Ask questions. Get curious. Use AI tools to gain insight. But don’t stop there. Don’t hand over your health to a platform that doesn’t know your name.
You deserve care that considers:
Lab data is powerful—but it’s not the whole story. And a chatbot isn’t your healthcare team.
You are not a spreadsheet.
You are not a protocol.
You are not a product of an algorithm.
You are a full human being with history, resilience, and symptoms that mean something. You deserve care that sees all of that.
Ready to Feel Better—for Real?
