What’s Detoxing Got to do With It?

Is your environment messing with your digestion and thyroid? 🤔 Let’s find out!

The body detoxes in a few ways—through sweating, breathing, and primarily through our bowels. But when there are imbalances in your GI tract, it can slow down the detoxification process, leaving you feeling bloated, puffy, exhausted, and like your metabolism is moving at a snail’s pace! 🐌

Some common GI imbalances that can slow down detoxification include:

  • Bacterial imbalances like high amounts of “bad” bacteria, low amounts of “good bacteria”, and even how well your body digests food can influence your detox capabilities!
  • High levels of enzymes that can “undo” detoxification. A marker on the GI MAP called beta-glucuronidase is a marker we use to assess if your detox-pathways are being sabotaged by your gut health.
  • Poor immune function and gut lining integrity. Markers like Secretory IgA and zonulin can tell us the state of your gut lining and immune layer in your gut.
  • High levels of “bad” bacteria can increase bloating, gas, and even affect your menstrual cycles because certain bacteria release toxins into your gut that add to your overall toxin load.

Detoxification is all about balancing what goes in versus what goes on! Here are some simple ways to reduce toxins coming INTO your body:

🌱 Cut Chemicals: Swap out toxic cleaners for natural ones to support both your thyroid and gut health. One of our faves is Branch Basics!

🚫 Ditch Plastics: BPA in plastics can disrupt hormones, impacting digestion and thyroid function. Opt for glass or stainless steel instead!

🌬️ Breathe Clean: Air purifiers and indoor plants can improve air quality, helping your thyroid and digestion function smoothly. We love the Air Doctor!

🥦 Go Organic: Organic foods are easier on your thyroid and gut, free from hormone-disrupting pesticides. No need to stress about being perfect here! A good rule of thumb we follow—if you can peel it, it’s usually okay not to be organic! For animal products, if organic isn’t an option, go for lower fat content (toxins like to store in fat cells!).

💧 Filter Your Water: Cleaner water means a happier thyroid and tummy! This includes both drinking water and bathing water. We installed AquaBliss on our shower heads!

✨ Small changes in your environment can lead to big improvements in your thyroid health, getting you one step closer to happier bowels! 🌈
