You don’t need another round of AIP, you need this (Thyroid School #7)

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at another plate of plain chicken and three “safe” vegetables, wondering how you got here doing another round of AIP, I see you.

📊 Maybe a food sensitivity test flagged a million things, and now you’re afraid to eat anything.

🙅‍♀️ Maybe every time you try to add a new food back in, your body protests, and you’re stuck in a cycle of bloating, exhaustion, and frustration.

😭 And maybe—just maybe—you’re wondering… How did my body get so sensitive in the first place? And that’s the real question.

🚨 Spoiler alert: It’s not because you need to eliminate even more foods.

Symptoms vs. Root Causes

Food reactions are symptoms, not the root problem. They’re like the smoke, not the fire. The real issues often go deeper:

✔️ A gut that’s struggling to break down food properly
✔️ Nutrient deficiencies that leave your cells running on fumes
✔️ Blood sugar swings that trigger stress hormone releases that make your immune system and inflammatory response go haywire.
✔️ A stress response that’s hijacking your digestion by sending you into fight/flight versus rest/digest
✔️ A sluggish detox system that increases your toxic burden and makes your “reaction bucket” constantly overflow

Eliminating foods might make you feel better temporarily, but it’s like having a clogged drain and deciding the best solution is to just never turn the faucet on. You don’t need to turn the water off—you need to clear the drain.

Your Cells Need Fuel to Work

Your cells need energy to function at their best. This energy comes from both macronutrients (calories)—protein, fat, and carbs—and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids). These nutrients provide the building blocks your body needs to create energy and carry out vital processes, including:

✨ Energy Production – Your cells need steady energy to power their functions. This includes the creation of ATP (the energy currency of your cells) that fuels your body’s processes, from basic functions to active movement. Without enough energy, things start to slow down—your metabolism, digestion, and even how your body uses food for fuel.

✨ Thyroid Function – The thyroid gland is a critical regulator of your metabolism. It sends signals to your cells to produce energy, burn calories, and support the functions of digestion, mood regulation, and metabolism. If your cells aren’t getting enough fuel from calories or micronutrients, this process slows down– on purpose. You have your thyroid to thank that (No, really. It is a protective adaptation). The result? Fatigue, bloating, and weight resistance.

✨ Digestion – Digestive capacity, gut lining integrity, and the gastrointestinal immune system are also dependent on a steady supply of nutrients to function properly. Without adequate amounts of types fuel, your digestive system struggles to break down food and repair itself, which can cause symptoms like bloating, discomfort, and food sensitivities.

When You’re Starving Your Cells

If you’re not getting enough of the right nutrients, your cells start to operate at a fraction of their full capacity. This leads to slower energy production, a sluggish metabolism, and poor digestion. Think of it like a car running on empty—it’s just not going to perform well.

Here’s what happens when your body isn’t getting the fuel it needs:

❌ Thyroid Function Slows Down – Without sufficient nutrients, your thyroid becomes less effective at producing the hormones needed for energy metabolism. This is why you feel tired, sluggish, and stuck at a weight plateau despite your best efforts.

❌ Metabolism Takes a Hit – Without enough fuel, your metabolism becomes less efficient at converting food into energy. The process of burning fat, stabilizing blood sugar, and regulating hormones all slows down.

❌ Gut Health Suffers – The gut relies on specific nutrients to produce stomach acid, enzymes, and repair cells. Without these, you can experience symptoms like bloating, indigestion, and even food sensitivities.

Nourishment Over Deprivation

So what’s the solution? It’s simple: nourishment over deprivation. When you focus on providing your body with a wide range of nutrients through a diverse diet, you allow your cells to function optimally. This doesn’t mean eating everything—but it does mean eating in a way that supports deep, lasting health.

✅ Protein helps repair tissue, balance blood sugar, and provide amino acids that fuel energy production. Did you know that our body requires a “pool” of amino acids to help with things like: tissue repair, detoxification, making hormones, creating neurotransmitters, and even helping to stabilize blood sugar?
✅ Healthy fats (like omega-3s) reduce inflammation and support hormone balance. These healthy fats not only combat inflammation, but they incorporate into the cell membrane to make the “fortress” around our cells strong and bendy and allow nutrients to go in and waste to go out!
✅ Colorful carbs are crucial for fueling metabolism and providing immediate energy to your cells. We need carbohydrates and ideally most of your carbs should be complex– meaning they have color (antioxidants), fiber, and protein. Good examples are things like beans, whole grains, fruits, and root veggies.
✅ Micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are the tiny but mighty players that ensure enzymes, hormones, and cellular processes are firing on all cylinders.

When your cells get what they need, your body can optimize thyroid function, regulate sex hormones, fuel digestion, and break through weight plateaus.

Boundaries, Not Restrictions

That said, there very well could be some foods that just don’t sit well with your body. The goal isn’t to ignore those sensitivities, but to focus on creating boundaries rather than restrictions. The truth is, when your cells are well-nourished, your gut is balanced, and your immune system isn’t hyper-reactive, your body can handle a lot more variety and fulfillment. (And food pays a BIG role in making all of this happen!). Simply cutting out food doesn’t solve the deeper issue.

So, instead of obsessing over what you can’t eat, let’s focus on nourishing your body with all the abundant, nutrient-dense foods it craves. When you prioritize fuel over deprivation, you won’t just feel better—you’ll be able to thrive.
